Mrs. Wicks Pie Shop in Winchester, Indiana, has a state reputation for being one of the best places to buy pies, especially the sugar cream pie. For the last 50 years or so, business has been steady at the restaurant that features its pies along with homemade food.
Some people like to make their own pies, because it is a family tradition for Thanksgiving. Whether the pie you have this Thanksgiving is made commercially or created in the family kitchen, one thing remains the same: there is a recipe involved. The ingredients are in different quantities, and there will probably be minor changes the list of ingredients. The recipe, either written or passed on through kitchen experience, is made available so the taste of that pie goes on for another Thanksgiving.
Here is my recipe for a grand Thanksgiving. It starts with a time and a place set for a gathering friends and family.
These may be old friends, new friends, a reunion of several generations, or a simple meeting of two of three people that haven’t been together for a long time. The place is the home or somewhere a person calls home for a while. This place has room for everyone since it is difficult to have everyone at the same time. Travel arrangements are the source of a story for those who get there late or who are unexpected.
Entertainment is provided by holiday music hinting that Christmas is not very far away. In the room is a television with one of several football games being broadcast, and people cheer their favorite teams (Go Cowboys). Most of all, people are talking to each other directly, not by texting or much by cell phones.
The food is one of the most important ingredients. The meats like turkey and ham, mashed potatoes, are prepared as the smell of breads and pies waffle in the air. Other vegetables are cooked in oven, microwave ovens and on the stove. Eventually all the ingredients for a grand Thanksgiving are in place and the feast begins.
One ingredient is really the most important, and it can’t be eaten, touched, or seen. It is the feeling of being thankful for what people have, even if the above scene is not what some people really have. In these times of economic hardship, of unpredictable changes and of changing relationships, a feeling of hope remains that a better day is coming.
After going through a material downsizing to make our smaller apartment a home, My wife and I are doing just fine, really. We have a place to live, we are warm inside when it’s cold outside, we have enough food and are doing well on our low-carbohydrate diet, and at least one of us will continue working after Christmas. I have this web blog to help keep me occupied, and I have the hope that things will continue to get better.
We will, by the way, be getting our own pie from Mrs.Wicks this year. I hope it is just as good as the pumpkin bread, made by the culinary students at Ivy Tech Community College. I bought a small loaf at the pitch-in dinner last week.
