His Beloved Country

Filed under: New Poems — admin @ 5:07 pm

His Beloved Country

A business man on a large island was a wise man, and he loved his country very much.  He participated in the country’s government in many ways, with each effort benefiting the country and its communities. He was elected to or appointed to government positions, and his businesses grew with the country.

He also had a family and loved them, too.  He had two sons, the oldest, John, and two years later, named Jeff.  He brought up the children to share his love for the people of his country and the obligations they were to inherit through family ties.  They were taught to be leaders of the community.  The two sons were also rivals.  In youth, this was expected to a certain degree.  In sports they tried to out -perform each other in the same sport to be the best at different sports.  Even in card and board games, the accusations of cheating were often justified.  The father still loved his two sons very much and did his best to raise them with the help of their mother.

As they brothers matured, the rivalry seemed to increase, first in their businesses. The one main business started by their father soon became two competing firms, and their influence on government politics was increased to where they were elected representatives of the two sides of the island.  The island had two ports, one at each end, and while their father was raising them, both ports prospered with increases in imports of goods and services.

By coincidence, both John and Jeff had married women who were twins, and loved being a part of a large family.  This was one thing that the father hoped would bring the two brothers together.  In time, the brothers grew more distant, and John first proposed that the west side of the island become its own country. He felt it had the most of the industrial growth, most of the population and in his opinion, was the best part of the island.  Most of his business contacts were on the west side of the island.  The West side could not only survive on its own, but be better than the east side of the island, which had more mountains and was more agricultural. His opinion was shared by others in government, and later John and others declared independence when a simple link fence divided the country in half, with gates at the three main roads across the island.

Soon a small army was developed to create and expand the simple fence to a dual layered electrified fence with razor wire on top and mines between.  The basic fence had become cement and steel with sentry posts.  The gates, secured, remained.  The wives of the two leaders suggested that each country give a two-mile square area for the other country to become land for an embassy, where people could help move people back and forth from each country diplomatically, and keeping social ties on each side.  Soon the ambassadors of each country had other economic issues to discuss.

Extra taxes, duties or tariffs had been created by the East and West sides of the island so that goods and services from the other side, either through the gates or via the harbors at the ports, were more expensive.  The more the demand, the higher the tariff, and this outraged the people of each country.  Businesses that depended on the extra trade soon were forced to lay-off workers, adding to the instability.

It was cheaper to buy items and services from other countries than from the other side of the island.  Knowing that the island was never going to be the same, the father of John and Jeff died a disappointed man. The governments seem to increase their security so that the army created to make the fence was expanded to protect the integrity of the countries, which meant that those opposed to the way things were going were forced to meet in secret, often, as suggested by the two countries’ governments in the guise of religious meetings.Soon the official influence of the Church was discredited.

As nature goes, their island had resisted minor storms, but on a Sunday, a typhoon came that was so strong several of the large ships on the harbor had been pushed miles inland.  Houses and building were destroyed, and many people were either killed or injured.  The countries asked for help.  Some aide came, but the people noticed that the wall that had been built to separate the two countries was destroyed in or by the storm.  The two countries, sharing the same grief, decided to merge and become one country so it could rebuild.  The mines were removed between the former fences. The families were united in the grief and the hope that the two sons could now make the island into their father’s idea of his beloved country.

Thanksgiving Alternatives by Thurgood, the Thanksgiving Duck

Thanksgiving Alternatives by Thurgood, the Thanksgiving Duck

Interview with Thurgood, the Thanksgiving Duck

Thanksgiving, a tradition expanded over the world, is a time for people to come to the table to enjoy the blessing of the season, but Thurgood, the Thanksgiving Duck, pictured above, believes this celebration does not have to include a serving of turkey.  The World of Words by Elias Tobias has an exclusive interview with this spokesperson of alternatives of the main course.
WOW:  What’s wrong with having Turkey for Thanksgiving?
Thurgood: Nothing, unless you are the turkey being served. Quack.  Quack.
WOW: I guess so, but Thanksgiving is a big deal to families.  Every year, it seems at most Thanksgiving dinners, there are just a few cooks, like a Mom and Grandmother, who cook everything for the whole gang.  It’s a lot of work, even when the sisters help out.  The rest of the relatives just watch TV and have a few drinks.
Thurgood:  That’s one of the problems.  Why should one or two people try to cook everything?  You know some people start to prepare for days before the big event, just so everything can be served all at once.
WOW:  You know what they say about too many cooks in the kitchen.
Thurgood:  Yeah, I know.   Not much gets done.  But other people can bring part of the meal.  I mean a Thanksgiving Potluck is a great idea.  Each family is assigned something, and each person has his or her specialty item.  My grandma made the best pies around. Most people will be happy to contribute. They fill that void of being needed other than just eating it all the food.
WOW:  And if someone can’t cook very well, they can bring drinks, silverware, plates and  even extra tables or chairs.
Thurgood:  You get the idea.  Make it a real family and friend event.
WOW:  Let’s get back to the main dish.
Thurgood:  How about Pork Roast?  I checked on the Internet and startcooking.com has ten alternatives to turkey.  They start out with Pork Roast.  Ham is great too. When buying a ham, make sure it says fully-cooked somewhere on the packaging. This means that all you’re doing is heating the thing up!
WOW:  What are some other ideas?
Thurgood:  Chicken, as in Roasted Chicken , or maybe Turkey Cutlets.  I know it’s still turkey, but they are a lot easier to prepare.  Who says you can’t serve fish on Thanksgiving.  How about  Baked Cod or microwaved Salmon.  All these ideas are in this article I mentioned.
WOW:  That’s impressive.  What other wild ideas are there?
Thurgood:  Eggplant Parmesan, anyone?  Beef Stew is a hearty alternative, too.  Leg of Lamb can be served instead of Turkey.  I mentioned pies, before, but how about Spaghetti Pie along with Pumpkin Pie or Pecan?  Go out on a limb for Thanksgiving.
WOW:  You have some good ideas.  We checked out the Internet, too, and Oprah has a page about duck.
Thurgood: Duck. Really.  Are you serious?
WOW:  Yes with side dishes like Balsamic-Glazed Brussels Sprouts with Bacon and Bread Crumbs, Roasted Carrots, Pearl Onions and Wild Mushrooms with Tarragon, Candied Yams with Homemade Marshmallows, Fresh Cranberry Relish and for desert, Sweet Potato and Pecan Pie with Cinnamon Cream.
Thurgood: The side dishes sound good, but the main dish, I don’t know.
WOW:  You want people to consider otheralternatives besides Turkey, don’t you?
Thurgood:  Yeah, but Duck? I feel like a Turkey all of a sudden.  I looked on the Internet and found a better alternative.  Cornish hens.  Each person has their own bird.  I found it at foodandwine.com.
Wow: Well, no matter how you look at it, the big Turkey baste is not always the answer to the main meal for Thanksgiving, and we thank Thurgood, the Thanksgiving Duck, for helping us out today with alternatives for the main course.
Thurgood:  I appreciate your interest in this topic, but personally would not advise Duck as the best way to go, if you know what I mean.

All in a Pill

All in a Pill

We’re sick, so we take some medicine,
Usually in the form of a pill.
Society’s sick, and we want quick
Fixes to its long-term ills.
Government spends too much, so
We raise taxes or cut the budget.
We’re too fat, so we look for
Results in a revolutionary diet.
We put ourselves at a crossroads,
With little room for compromise.
People need to be helped while
Pride and principle fuel the divide.
The weight of indecision has
Consequences beyond the belt loop,
Bellies are feed and pockets filled
As some get another bowl of soup.
There has to be a commitment
For a full medical recovery.
We can and have been able to
Work together in this country.

Rules were meant to be broken

Rules were meant to be broken

broken-rules.JPG

Rules were meant to be broken

Things are not as clear and simple as they look,
And people do the wrong acts for the right reason.
That’s the time to forget about doing things by the book.
It’s an end justify the means kind of decision.
Rules were made for people who can’t work together,
And thus another policy or procedure is born.
People earn degrees in the study and application of this,
Despite the regular workers water cooler scorn.
Rules were meant to be broken, or at least changed,
Since the lives of people are constantly rearranged.
