My Brother
My Brother
I watched Legends of the Fall recently, and it has been a long time since I’d seen it last. Brad Pitt’s character, Tristan, goes through an emotional and sometimes violent changes in emotion during the film, enough to make me think about this poem.
My Brother
These are merely metal bars in front of me,
And they can’t stop my love for you.
You loved me first, and then my brother,
And now I’m in jail seen as a fool.
I did what I thought was right, but
Others seem to think it was wrong.
I went away for a long time, and you
Had to wait years for my return.
By then your love for him grew and
His passion for you burned.
Even though you married him,
Your love for me was still strong.
He did all the right things in life,
Yet he has no children, no son.
When I came back from my journey,
The feelings you had for me begun
to quietly come back in your smile.
Our love is celebrated in songs.
In my mind, I committed no crime
And, in time, eventually will be set free.
I’m sure my brother will find a way
Out, and find a way to forgive me.
They say blood is thicker than water,
And someday soon we’ll get along.
