Who do I want to be when I grow up?
Who do I want to be when I grow up?
Who do I want to be when I grow up,
Now that I get a senior discount at
The movie theater since my hair is a
A lighter shade of gray?
I’ve had my share of jobs in the past,
And I continue to work today.
I’ve gone to college and trained
For at least two or three careers,
And not being a success financially
Was always one of my worst fears.
I’ve been a provider to help keep
A home for my growing family, and
I’ve served in my nation’s uniform.
After all this, who am I supposed to be?
When I was younger, as a child, I
thought that 40 would be very old,
and I wanted to grow up faster, but
I should enjoy childhood, I was told.
After I see what’s happening around me,
Now I’m the one who’s saying that line.
I see a strange look on the young faces
That many years ago was also mine.
What do I want to be when I grow up,
Now that I have done a few things
Which, at the time, were expected,
But now they are done?
Maybe I can try to get away with
Being a kid again and have some fun.
