Father’s Day poem

For all the fathers, past and present
on Father’s day June 17, 2018

Elias Tobias

Father’s Day poem

This Father’s day poem is hard to write.
I want it to be classy, witty, and bright.
I want it to be different, original and new,
not a store-bought poem for many “you’s”.
I want it to have meaning for all time,
and somehow have a sense of rhyme.
I want it to reflect an image of the past,
an image that is real, positive and has
implied a note of thanks for things learned.
Even with mistakes, bridges are not burned.
Hundreds of poems grew from my imagination,
a few have been honored with publication.
They come easy; my fingers just type.
But this one is special; it has to be right.
Sometimes words get in the way of what
my heart really would like to like to say.
So here, Dad, is a poem for your Father’s Day.

Faded Rainbows

Faded Rainbows

You can’t have a rainbow without the rain.
You don’t see a rainbow on a bright sunny day.
It takes some of those raindrops in the sky
For the sunlight to reflect colors a certain way.

The Scout

The Scout

I am from a distant star,
but in many ways I’m like you.
My mission has brought me far to
look for a place with food and fuel.

We need a place to send a colony,
so the rest on our planet can live.
Perhaps others will be following me,
with technology in exchange as gifts.

But I don’t know if we will land
on a planet living it’s last breath.
I can’t reason or understand the
obsession for destruction and death.

These are problems we want to avoid,
since it’s like this where we came from.
Here people play with lives like toys.
It’s time to select another sun.

Temporary Trumpet

Temporary Trumpet

The green leaves of the Hibiscus rise above
the blades of grass like a skyscraper,
and a lone bloom announces God’s glory
through the spectrum of bright
yellow to ruby red petals.
Other parts are exposed to reveal a
practical beauty. The music made can
be heard in the wind as the
trumpet basks in the warmth
of the afternoon sun. By the next morning,
the instrument is silenced because the
notes are folded in the petals. The bloom will
fall after another trumpet sounds.

The Carpenter’s Walls

The Carpenter’s Walls

You and I are the walls of this house,
and our parents form the roof.
Other people we know make the
other homes, Our feelings and attitudes
are the decorations on the walls,
and they change as we change.
Time is expressed in the moments
shared by our memories.
The condition of our house will depend on
the original designs of the Master Architect,
the quality of construction of the Carpenter,
and the repairs made while we
live together in our house.

Northbound

A poem by Brother Levi Jacobs

Northbound

Fortunately, the other lanes have
blended into one on this
highway to heaven,

but I have a devil of a time with
those on the southbound
lane trying to cross the center
line.

An accident in the northbound
could cost a person the
ultimate fine in the Final
Court of Life.

No Mail Today

A poem by Brother Kyle Morgan Stewart

No Mail Today

Today my mailbox was empty,
such an unexpected thrill.
I already got my magazines to read,
and I don’t need any more bills.
The vacancy was a real relief.

LSC Fraternity to get new woman member?

Karen Ladonnavich

Woman real estate executive sponsored for membership in unofficial Lambda Sigma Chi fraternity

For the first time in its history, the unofficial Lambda Sigma Chi fraternity at the World of words by Elias Tobias is considering a woman to be included in its ranks. One of first LSC brother Adrian parker has established himself as a major contributor to the website, and with this nomination, has suggested the all-male fraternity has become more like a professional or honorary type of fraternity.  Parker argued that if the boy scouts can allow girls in cub scouts and females in that organization’s leadership, then the Lambda Sigma Chi’s could include a qualified female.

Parker has nominated Karen Ladonnavich, a real estate executive and manager for a major real estate company with an office in Peoria, Ill., where Parker has been an insurance agency since the 1990’s.  He has successfully built up his agency to the point where he and his wife and four children from their marriage and past marriages have moved to a new house, brokered of course, by Ladonnavich.  By now, most of the children have moved away and started their own families.  The new residence has become “grandpa’s house” and Adrian his considering an early retirement to play the new role as a grandparent.

Parker and Ladonnavich are members of a Peoria -area chapter of an organization called BNI, that stands for Businesses Networking International, which thrives on its members referring business to each other, and the referrals are measured in dollars.  Over the years, the homes Ladonnavich has sold were sometimes insured by Parker’s business, and Parker brought her new clients as well.  As members, they got to know each other as friends and he discovered her hobby of writing poetry.  After a review of her work and other later discussions, Parker has made a formal nomination to include her as a member of the unofficial Lambda Sigma Chi fraternity.

Copies of her portfolio of work have been sent to the other members of the Lambda Sigma Chi fraternity, and the work will be considered for two months.  By the first week of July, the vote of the membership will decide if the all-male group will have its first female member.

Put the Blame on Me

lsc-t-shirtlogo.jpg

A poem by Brother Rufus McDougal

Put the Blame on Me

If you are going to blame anyone.
just put the blame on me.
I should have been with you more often,
not places I needn’t be.
I’m sorry if I caused you any pain,
My vision wasn’t clear to see.
Like the saying goes, I couldn’t
see the forest for the trees.
Your eyes can see through to my heart,
and it is your love I need.
If you are going to blame anyone.
just put the blame on me.
