Father’s Day poem

For all the fathers, past and present
on Father’s day June 17, 2018

Elias Tobias

Father’s Day poem

This Father’s day poem is hard to write.
I want it to be classy, witty, and bright.
I want it to be different, original and new,
not a store-bought poem for many “you’s”.
I want it to have meaning for all time,
and somehow have a sense of rhyme.
I want it to reflect an image of the past,
an image that is real, positive and has
implied a note of thanks for things learned.
Even with mistakes, bridges are not burned.
Hundreds of poems grew from my imagination,
a few have been honored with publication.
They come easy; my fingers just type.
But this one is special; it has to be right.
Sometimes words get in the way of what
my heart really would like to like to say.
So here, Dad, is a poem for your Father’s Day.

Faded Rainbows

Faded Rainbows

You can’t have a rainbow without the rain.
You don’t see a rainbow on a bright sunny day.
It takes some of those raindrops in the sky
For the sunlight to reflect colors a certain way.

Temporary Trumpet

Temporary Trumpet

The green leaves of the Hibiscus rise above
the blades of grass like a skyscraper,
and a lone bloom announces God’s glory
through the spectrum of bright
yellow to ruby red petals.
Other parts are exposed to reveal a
practical beauty. The music made can
be heard in the wind as the
trumpet basks in the warmth
of the afternoon sun. By the next morning,
the instrument is silenced because the
notes are folded in the petals. The bloom will
fall after another trumpet sounds.

The Brass Ring

The Brass Ring

I go on
doing what I can
day after day.

I go to work,
then I go home
to rest and play.

But I’m still watching for the
brass ring to fall
(fall, fall, fall) from the sky.

So I could be watching for that
brass ring to fall
(fall, fall, fall) until I die.

Hole in my heart

Hole in my heart

There’s a hole in my heart,
And the pages in the past keep on turning.
The love that was lost keeps on burning.
I just can’t understand why
You don’t want me for your man.
I can’t live my life without you.

Things are not as simple as they seem to be.
It’s convenient to invent another reality,
But the past resurfaces eventually,
Since keys to memories remain daily.
Fingerprints on the scene are obviously
Evidence she did the crime convincingly.
Like a cake, layers of lies raise possibilities,
And suspects’ motives twist ironically,
So much, it makes for a movie mystery.
At the end, she walks away, innocently,
But that is never the end of the story.

There’s a hole in my heart,
And the pages in the past keep on turning.
The love that was lost keeps on burning.
I just can’t understand why
You don’t want me for your man.
I can’t live my life without you.

Things are not as simple as they seem to be.
Sign with a stamp, and enter automatically
A million dollar sweepstakes or lottery,
But the odds of losing are mathematically
Decided, and, of course, done legally.
The real winners are a strange minority.
Costs of winning transfer to the majority,
And the promotion is done effectively.
Business incomes increase exponentially.
There will be those who want things free,
But that is never the end of the story.

There’s a hole in my heart,
Yet love for my wife keeps on beating.
The pain I feel inside keeps on hurting.
I just can’t understand why
You don’t want me for your man.
I can’t live my life without you.

Things are not as simple as they seem to be.
Time and again, humans ignore history,
And try to extend their possibilities.
World resources are used inefficiently,
And many people suffer, consequently.
Aided with more machines and technology
Countries connect by a complex economy.
Governments try to work together politically,
But strengthen their power with the military.
Life would be better if we lived in harmony,
But that is never the end of the story.

There’s a hole in my heart,
Yet love for my wife keeps on beating.
The pain I feel inside keeps on hurting.
I just can’t understand why
You don’t want me for your man.
I can’t live my life without you.

Things are not as simple as they seem to be,
When it comes to relationships romantically.
Who we love or hate is found astrologically.
Teenagers deal daily with changes in puberty.
Feelings and emotions are expressed musically.
Years of childhood disappear dramatically
Birth rates are proof of love’s popularity,
And more marriages are mixed racially.
The definition of what makes a family
Is challenged in county court rooms daily,
But that is never the end of the story.

Things are not as simple as they seem to be.

There’s a hole in my heart,
And the pages in the past keep on turning.
The love that was lost keeps on burning.
I just can’t understand why
You don’t want me for your man.
I can’t live my life without you.

Are you related to George Washington?

Are you related to George Washington?

I remember when my mother did
some research in our family ancestry,
and she found out we were part of
hundreds related to George Washington.
I remember a picture of him, a young
surveyor’s son with the ladies,
a future father of America, a general
and president George Washington.
I’ve always liked history and this is a
fun fact to for me to know,
a connection to the man on the
dollar bills I use, George Washington.

Rainbow of Love

Editor’s Note: This is the only poem that my wife has written to and for me.

Rainbow of Love

My love for you is like a rainbow.
It’s a never ending circle of love
with you at the center of its existence.
The shades of the rainbow range from
bright to dull, as do my emotions.
They are bright and lively when you are near.
They are subdued, even perhaps dull,
when we are apart. The colors of the
rainbow reflect my passion for you.
My passion ranges from hot red,
Whenever you touch me, to cool blue
when we have to part. And like God’s
promise of the rainbow to all men,
for all time, let the rainbow be a
visual reminder to you of the promise
from my heart, to love you for all time.

To my beloved Mike: Patty

Popcorn

Popcorn

Kernels of popcorn are feelings.
The seed has all it needs to become another
many times over in its genetic code.
People make their feelings known at birth
and feelings mature, packaged by society.
A population boom threatens the earth.

Popcorn is sprinkled in a pan of problems,
gets heated by a soul’s unrest and stress,
and feelings expand to the point that they
turn inside out. The scene can get ugly.
Other people feed upon these moments.
In special times, the feelings of love
beyond friendship expand into ecstasy
and the sounds of popcorn hitting the lid
of the pan repeat in irregular rhythm.
Butter and salt make popcorn taste better.

A handful of problems, under the worst of
conditions, can become a bag of uncontrollable
terror and destruction of property and life.
In the best of times, the bag can be filled
with quality name brand memories that
will last even after the movie is over.
Not all the kernels of trouble will pop, though,
while other kernels just will get burned
before they can transform themselves
into exposed feelings ready to devoured.

It is a matter of chance of fate which designs the
destiny of our feelings.

I’m Dead

Editor’s Note: I did really get one of these letters from an insurance company that I have been paying into for years as a death benefit, and after a call to a customer service rep., the situation was quickly cleared. All the documentation needed was the statement at the bottom of their letter, “I am not dead!” signed with the date. I mailed the letter out the next day, after I made a copy of it, for my records.

I’m Dead

I got a letter in the mail this weekend,
and I was surprised to what it said.
The notice was addressed to my estate, and
it was checking to see if I was dead.
I really did wake up this morning, and
I do feel very much alive.
I have been through some rough times in
my life, not sure if I would survive.
I don’t have much of any estate, and
think I still have much to give.
My potential is exponential the
longer I live.
I need to call the insurance company
on Monday to set the record straight.
I really don’t need a letter from that
sort of company to determine my fate.
I could be an optimist, and view this
as a second chance.
All this is a time to have a good
long and healthy laugh.
I know for a fact that thousands
of guys share my similar name,
and that some person who made
a typographical error is to blame.
All this can also be a lesson
not take each day for granted.
I should live each moment with a
special meaning and each hour
while they all last.

For Grandma

For Grandma

You’d think that you should
have solved your problems at 81,
but the world keeps spinning,
and your feet are on the run.
At your age you should relax,
enjoy life, smile and have fun;
but the new day arrives
and the job of living has begun.
The hours bring new challenges
and you face them as they come.
The sun sets the scene for
a chance to get the dishes done.
You get a few moments to rest
And expect some kind of reaction.
You are always trying to keep
the family together as one.
Your efforts are not forgotten
by your loving wordy grandson.
