The Lady at the Restaurant

A poem by Brother Kyle Morgan Stewart

The Lady at the Restaurant

The couple were seniors, but they weren’t “old”.
With the expertise of a Toastmaster, the Southern
woman said her grits were sour and spoiled.
The waitress, promptly took the bowl to the cook,
and I tried not to listen or look at the couple.
The bowl could not be replaced, and the
lady ordered something else instead; French Fries
with gravy. You should have seen the eyes in her head
when the waitress brought the second order out.
This is not what she wanted, with a small pout.
She wanted home fries with gravy, and started
eating the French Fries anyway. Too her surprise,
her meal was tasting good. The humor of the
waitress did not fade, and talked with them well.
The woman finally said she said the wrong word.
I ate my meal, satisfied, and thought she was absurd.
