My Left Foot

My Left Foot

I can talk and walk and look like everyone
else,  but my left foot is fake, covered
with socks shoes and long pants. I’ve got
used this over the last 20 years. But
there were times when I had some fears.
During the war, my company advanced on a
grassy slanted slope against mortars and
machine gun nests hidden in the brush.
A friend and soldier next to me fell, instantly
lifeless,  with a pinned grenade in his
right hand. I crouched down, grabbed and
unpinned the grenade and through it at the
machine gun.The weapon had killed two of
the enemy, and for a split second the bullets
stopped.
I got up, aimed my rifle and started shooting,
but I fell down again. Another machine gun
had cut through my uniform and boots and
severed my left foot as quickly as a butcher
with a sharp cleaver.  I got a new foot, along
with a Silver Star, Purple Heart, and a unit
citation for our bravery that day.  I wonder
why I am alive today,   I said I would defend
this country with my life, and instead  just
gave up my left foot.

Falling Flags

Falling Flags

On the battlefield in the woods, cries of wounded
far outweigh the silence of the dead,
who have faced their final fate.
Surviving soldiers have advanced as the sounds
of bullets and pounding shells echo in the distance.
Intense fires ignite the flames of hate, the only
force which keeps the war going,
pitting brother against brother
and family against family.
Fiags fall and they are picked up again,
briefly touching the hallowed ground,
but only for a few moments as the
battle continues until it, somehow, stops.

Soldiers

Veterans day

Soldiers

Soldiers don’t make war;
They just fight in them,
And when the last bullet flies,
They hope it’s the end.
When they stop to count the costs,
Soldiers know what they’ve lost.
Some are hurt with lost limbs
And some paid the ultimate price –
Lives lost are the biggest sacrifice.
Each of them has their own story,
And say they don’t fight for the glory.
They fight for freedom’s defense,
And to protect their fellow friends.
When peace does make its round,
Shouts of joy will sound from
All the nations in the world.

War

Religion promotes it.
Soldiers fight in it.
Countries defend it.
Historians analyze it.
Technology benefits from it.

Morticians profit by it.
Old men try to forget it.
Politicians argue about it.
Families change from it.
Soldiers wish it was over.
