Anonymous

In first grade, we talked about families,
And I wondered why I had no daddy.
I asked my mom at the store one day,
And she didn’t have much to say,
Except that his name was Anonymous.
I didn’t know him, and she said to
Look it up in a dictionary.  I cried
For two days straight after that.
Who would I take me to the school’s
Father-daughter dances, and who
Would walk me down the aisle when
I get married after he would first
Say it’s okay to get married?
My mom says she doesn’t even know,
So I stare at men’s faces looking for
My own reflection in their eyes.
