Waitin’ at the Bus Stop Blues

Waitin’ at the Bus Stop Blues

I got the waitin’ at the bus stop blues,
And the time wasted is not new.
I got the waitin’ at the bus stop blues,
but I’m glad I’m waitin’ with you.

Here we are again waitin’ on the bus.
I’m beginning to think they forget about us.
They are at least 15-20 minutes late,
and I really need to get to work today.
It’s cold when the wind blows on the street.
I feel the chill from my head to my feet.
I think it’s colder that it was yesterday,
and weatherman says winter is here to stay.

I got the waitin’ at the bus stop blues,
And the time wasted is not new.
I got the waitin’ at the bus stop blues,
but I’m glad I’m waitin’ with you.

Icy roads may have caused an accident,
and the door to the bus may be bent.
Then how am I going to get in, or maybe
the problems are just my imagination.
It’s times like this I wish we had a car,
but the money we make won’t go that far.
The kind of car I want costs too much,
then I have to buy gas, tires and such.

I got the waitin’ at the bus stop blues,
And the time wasted is not new.
I got the waitin’ at the bus stop blues,
but I’m glad I’m waitin’ with you.

Popcorn

Popcorn

Kernels of popcorn are feelings.
The seed has all it needs to become another
many times over in its genetic code.
People make their feelings known at birth
and feelings mature, packaged by society.
A population boom threatens the earth.

Popcorn is sprinkled in a pan of problems,
gets heated by a soul’s unrest and stress,
and feelings expand to the point that they
turn inside out. The scene can get ugly.
Other people feed upon these moments.
In special times, the feelings of love
beyond friendship expand into ecstasy
and the sounds of popcorn hitting the lid
of the pan repeat in irregular rhythm.
Butter and salt make popcorn taste better.

A handful of problems, under the worst of
conditions, can become a bag of uncontrollable
terror and destruction of property and life.
In the best of times, the bag can be filled
with quality name brand memories that
will last even after the movie is over.
Not all the kernels of trouble will pop, though,
while other kernels just will get burned
before they can transform themselves
into exposed feelings ready to devoured.

It is a matter of chance of fate which designs the
destiny of our feelings.

Power to the People

Editor’s Note: John Lennon’s famous anthem for a call to action still has energy and this poem explores ways this energy can be used to solve the problems we face each day in the world.

Power to the People

There are several girls and boys who give up
and want others to give Christmas toys.
All together say “Power to the People!,
Power to the People right now!”

People have a right to express their discontent
with the politics of the current government.
All together say “Power to the People!,
Power to the People right now!”

There are many who don’t have enough to eat,
or their only home can be found in the streets.
All together say “Power to the People!,
Power to the People right now!”

Police want to stop violence and crime,
and those convicted must face the time.
All together say “Power to the People!,
Power to the People right now!”

Each one of us is part of the human race;
we need to live in a shared space.
All together say “Power to the People!,
Power to the People right now!”

Doctors need to find ways for better health,
and it can be done if we share our wealth.
All together say “Power to the People!,
Power to the People right now!”

We need to support members of our military
Efforts to secure our freedoms are necessary.
All together say “Power to the People!,
Power to the People right now!”

Religions are faith-based and should get along,
each singing their own peaceful songs.
All together say “Power to the People!,
Power to the People right now!”

I’m Dead

Editor’s Note: I did really get one of these letters from an insurance company that I have been paying into for years as a death benefit, and after a call to a customer service rep., the situation was quickly cleared. All the documentation needed was the statement at the bottom of their letter, “I am not dead!” signed with the date. I mailed the letter out the next day, after I made a copy of it, for my records.

I’m Dead

I got a letter in the mail this weekend,
and I was surprised to what it said.
The notice was addressed to my estate, and
it was checking to see if I was dead.
I really did wake up this morning, and
I do feel very much alive.
I have been through some rough times in
my life, not sure if I would survive.
I don’t have much of any estate, and
think I still have much to give.
My potential is exponential the
longer I live.
I need to call the insurance company
on Monday to set the record straight.
I really don’t need a letter from that
sort of company to determine my fate.
I could be an optimist, and view this
as a second chance.
All this is a time to have a good
long and healthy laugh.
I know for a fact that thousands
of guys share my similar name,
and that some person who made
a typographical error is to blame.
All this can also be a lesson
not take each day for granted.
I should live each moment with a
special meaning and each hour
while they all last.

For Grandma

For Grandma

You’d think that you should
have solved your problems at 81,
but the world keeps spinning,
and your feet are on the run.
At your age you should relax,
enjoy life, smile and have fun;
but the new day arrives
and the job of living has begun.
The hours bring new challenges
and you face them as they come.
The sun sets the scene for
a chance to get the dishes done.
You get a few moments to rest
And expect some kind of reaction.
You are always trying to keep
the family together as one.
Your efforts are not forgotten
by your loving wordy grandson.

The Toast

Editor’s Note: Part of me would have liked to have lived in the Old West in the 1860’s until the 1890’s. when the end of the old west happened.  In this poem I imagine myself being a young cowboy at this time in out American history.

The Toast

Here’s a toast to the naked lady
In the painting on this saloon wall.
If it weren’t for this bottle on the
table, I wouldn’t see her at all.
All the answers I need can be
found as I fill my shot glass,
and then I’ll spend some time
with a cute and kind saloon lass..
I have a right for a few drinks
after a 3-month long cattle drive.
They said the pay would be good,
but it was hell to just survive.
After tomorrow, I’ll find my horse
and see what comes my way.
I’ll get a bath and more bullets,
and then find a job here to stay.
There’s a lot of land around here
and also owners of a ranch.
Maybe one of them will give this
lonely cowboy another chance.

Naked, but not afraid

Naked, but not afraid

Lord, before you I am naked, but not afraid.
Even with my wealth of clothes, you see what
is in my heart and in my soul and in my mind.
Any clothes I wear were gained through your grace,
and my gifts to others are your gifts through me.
Jesus, on the cross, was naked, but not afraid,
and died, only to rise again to be by your side.
I pray that you will keep me alive to tomorrow.

A Real Rock and Roll Love Song

A Real Rock and Roll Love Song

I would like to get to know you better,
but I really think I should go.
My short break is almost over, and I
need to get ready for another show.
I have a good feelng about you, and you
have changed me more than you know.
On stage, I sing my songs to the fans,
and I feel the heat from the lights.
On this tour, I sing the same songs
in a different city every night.
I like to be with the guys on the road,
and work hard to make things right.
But there is restless feeling in my heart,
a sense something needs to change.
In spite my musical talent or ability,
I know that thing won’t happen on stage.
It’s the time away from this place
I know that neeeds to be rearranged.
After what little time I had with you,
you may be the answer to my prayers.
I am surounded by those who need me,
but I need someone who really cares.
I put my feelings in these songs,
But some emotions are hard to share.
For some unexpected reason, these
feelings I have for you are strong.
So take these passes to the VIP
section; the concert won’t be long.
Listen to the words from my heart,
a real rock and roll love song.

The Addict

Editor’s Note: This poem is not written in defense of drug abuse, illegal drugs or actions taken by people under the influence of drugs. Instead, it is an attempt by this author to get in the place of an addict based on numerous media reports which seem to daily indicate a growing problem of drug abuse in this country.

The Addict

One day I was sick, very ill, and
the doctor prescribed potent pills.
I need them; couldn’t get my fill, and
I can’t get enough of them still.
They seem to take away my will.
I started stealing to pay the bills.
Then my gun was for me to kill those
who tried to stop me from my pills.
