Gypsy Heart

You live like a wandering gypsy,
always changing your identity.
Even though you have a new name,
you seem to play the same games.
You force people like me to give
you their body, soul and heart.
Then you steal my property,
and then make a new start.
There’s no court in all the land
that can get back what you took from me.
Justice will be when you make
a mistake, and will no longer be free
to hurt people with your gypsy heart.

I’m a work in progress; I’m not done yet.
Someday I’ll do something great, I bet.
What you see is what you get.

What you see is what you get.
It’s the only thing I know.
I plant my seeds in the garden
And watch the patch grow.
I work to use the right ways
As I dig the garden’s rows,
But sometimes I change direction
Depending on the way the wind blows.

I’m catching butterflies in my net.

Criminal Love Affair

My love for you is criminal,
Not because it’s against the law.
It shouldn’t exist at all,
For you have robbed me of
My freedom, who I thought
I was and who I used to be.
You made me change who
I am, and now I depend on you
To be the main part of my life.
Each day would not be complete
Without the touch of your kiss.
My life will never be the same,
But somehow I feel like a
Winner in this game of love.

Family Trees

Family Trees

From birth,
a life is a series yes’s and no’s,
zeros and ones,
a code of if’s and then’s,
a constant flow chart
of decisions made by others
and a recognized gene pool,
and eventually by that person
which create the roots
of the family tree. This is a
cycle which repeats itself
every other second
of each day in the world
creating a diverse forest
which must coexist on this
world of limited resources.

Saved by a Sandbar

Saved by a Sandbar

I’ve been caught up in the river of life,
Moving faster as I roll downstream,
And at the rapids I fall into whirlpools
Which spin me in different directions.
I clutch onto a large log past the rapids,
So I can have a chance to breath, and
Suddenly I stop as the log jams on a
Large sandbar rising above the water.
I climb the log to the wet sand with
The rain and winds against my skin.
Soon the storm is over and the
River’s edge recedes to near normal.
A day after landing on the sandbar,
I walk on the log to the shore where
I find refuge in the woods and roads
That run through it to my home.
Later that year, I returned to the
River and that sandbar was gone.

Steppin’ Out

A poem by Brother Paul Abernathy, written before he became a minister… a look back to his rock and roll days.

Steppin’ Out

How would you like to have some fun?
It would be good, whether you want it or not.
At this party, though, honey, I’m the only one.
Put away the books and give it a shot.
First we’ll talk, eat, and make some love.
Then I’ll show you what I got.
Why don’t you go steppin’ out tonight?

You look like you could use a break.
I mean what I say and it’s not just a line.
There is no curfew; we’ll stay out late
And we won’t pay attention to the time.
We’ll leave our future to fate
And hope our future will be fine.
Why don’t you go steppin’ out tonight?

Oh, step out now. (guitar solo here)

Start at the Heart

When it seems like the sky’s falling in,
and money seems too tight,
you don’t know here to begin.
One place to start is the heart.
That’s where feelings can grow.
That’s where people know where
they can look to see through
the suffering and the pain.

If you start at the heart,
then only the blood will flow,
and the tempers will slow down
long enough to use some reason.
You will get through the day.
If you start at the heart, things
can only get better.
Good times might not last forever,
but the bills will be paid and
the sky won’t fall anymore.

When you really want to see who you are,
Do not look in a mirror to get a clear point of view
Because the looking glass presents an opposite image
Of perhaps an unwanted reality; left becomes right,
Good turns to evil and the light can become dark.
Seek the truth from those around you, and
Be judged by your actions, not by your words.
Through these years, you can see what
kind of person you can be.
