No Beans

No Beans

Don’t need no beans for supper now.
You know what happens after that plate.
Don’t need no beans for supper now.
I want to have a fat, juicy steak.

Don’t need no beans for supper now.
Even if you added fresh cornbread.
Don’t need no beans for supper now.
This month I’ve been beaned to death.

Don’t need no beans for supper now.
I know my paycheck arrived late.
Don’t need no beans for supper now.
So, let’s go out and celebrate!

I-465

I-465

Traffic along I-465 in Indianapolis, IN (photo by Mike Hall)

I-465

I leave an hour early, so I won’t be late,
And I need to be ready at my desk at eight.
Driving on I-465 is not a pleasurable drive.
Nerves of steel are needed to survive.
You have to watch for drivers that go in and out.
Things almost happen so much I want to shout.
It is an art getting to the correct turn lane,
And catching the right ramp is just insane.
I like to listen to the satellite radio since
The music is my kind of rock and roll.
It sets my mind on a mental cruise control.
I view the 55 mph speed limit signs as a guide,
But at times I see cars pulled over roadside.
In the morning, the sun blinds me from the East.
Bad weather is on the way home from the West.
I don’t think going any direction is the best.
Merging traffic slows speeds down to a crawl,
Or there is an accident, and it doesn’t move at all.
Beware of orange barrels and signs of construction.
Barricades and shifting lanes are obstructions.
The road turns into another animal at night.
More trucks are present, and the lights are bright.
Precipitation in Indiana changes with the seasons,
And people drive fast in the snow for no reason,
Except, like chickens, to get to the other side,
But that’s an awful waste of a way to die.
Despite alternatives, 465 driving a necessity
When you need to get somewhere in the city.
Be of sound mind to be prepared before you go,
Just like a feeling Indy 500 drivers should know.

Bob of All Trades

Bob of All Trades

I’ve had years of doubt from people who questioned my abilities,
But like a flood in drought, I have exceeded their expectations and
In an detoured route, expanded elements of my responsibilities
to the point I could count on a lifetime resume of different capabilities.
This all has been in the past, and had to learn something new
Because what I have learned as a living is null and void, through.
I’m a guy named Bob, finding a reason to put on my work shoes.

My Left Foot

silver star

My Left Foot

I can talk and walk and look like everyone
else,  but my left foot is fake, covered
with socks shoes and long pants. I’ve got
used this over the last 20 years. But
there were times when I had some fears.
During the war, my company advanced on a
grassy slanted slope against mortars and
machine gun nests hidden in the brush.
A friend and soldier next to me fell, instantly
lifeless,  with a pinned grenade in his
right hand. I crouched down, grabbed and
unpinned the grenade and through it at the
machine gun.The weapon had killed two of
the enemy, and for a split second the bullets
stopped.
I got up, aimed my rifle and started shooting,
but I fell down again. Another machine gun
had cut through my uniform and boots and
severed my left foot as quickly as a butcher
with a sharp cleaver.  I got a new foot, along
with a Silver Star, Purple Heart, and a unit
citation for our bravery that day.  I wonder
why I am alive today,   I said I would defend
this country with my life, and instead  just
gave up my left foot.

Jazz Music

Jazz Music

When you really listen to craft jazz music
Listen for the notes you would expect,
But are off a few beats as you tap your feet.
When you really listen to craft jazz music
Listen for the notes you wouldn’t expect,
Like little gems in disguise that are a surprise.

All of Me

All of Me

If you really want to be with me,
Then look at all of me, not just
Any part you happen to see.
Then I’ll fall in love with you.

I will show you in my time,
The talents I have in mind,
And a heart that is kind.
Then I’ll fall in love with you.

You seem to like the cover
In a search for a lover, but I’m
a book that reads like no other.
Then I’ll fall in love with you.

Steel Words

Steel Words

As molten iron and steel are forged and
tempered into any form or shape in the hands of man,
words can be boiled in controversy or conflict,
and constructed into platforms where ideas are
broadcast which affect the lives of millions of people,
even if they never heard the words at all.
Some call this process government, and after
all the half-lies or misquotes are exposed, there
is a truth which survives longer than rusted
twisted metal from forgotten wars or
abandoned refrigerators by the side of the road.

Life’s a Beach

Life’s a Beach

Wave after wave of terrorism, disease, and hunger
and drug abuse erodes the sand of the American beaches.
People run to the water to cool themselves from
the hot sand and blowing wind. Riptides of
historically reoccurring problems of domestic violence,
crime, discrimination and poverty never seem
to reach the water’s surface, and they flow parallel to
the beach, pulling people under the water unexpectedly.
Even the best of swimmers suffer, and
some even drown as heroes.  The politicians in lifeguard
suits proclaim something should be done about those
wanting help, but they debate and argue about how to do
it while soaking in the sun in the elevated towers on the
beach. Decisions are rarely made as their tans get darker
The beach itself is not that safe because medical waste
from the polluted water rolls on shore and shells
are not the only things in the sand that are sharp.
Sunglasses help change the depth of perception,
but the view never changes. The problems still
exist and not much is done to correct them.

Falling Flags

Falling Flags

On the battlefield in the woods, cries of wounded
far outweigh the silence of the dead,
who have faced their final fate.
Surviving soldiers have advanced as the sounds
of bullets and pounding shells echo in the distance.
Intense fires ignite the flames of hate, the only
force which keeps the war going,
pitting brother against brother
and family against family.
Fiags fall and they are picked up again,
briefly touching the hallowed ground,
but only for a few moments as the
battle continues until it, somehow, stops.

Saved by a Sandbar

Saved by a Sandbar

I’ve been caught up in the river of life,
Moving faster as I roll downstream,
And at the rapids I fall into whirlpools
Which spin me in different directions.
I clutch onto a large log past the rapids,
So I can have a chance to breath, and
Suddenly I stop as the log jams on a
Large sandbar rising above the water.
I climb the log to the wet sand with
The rain and winds against my skin.
Soon the storm is over and the
River’s edge recedes to near normal.
A day after landing on the sandbar,
I walk on the log to the shore where
I find refuge in the woods and roads
That run through it to my home.
Later that year, I returned to the
River and that sandbar was gone.
