The Real Thing

Editor’s Note: This poem was written on the day the oldest niece from one of my sisters accepted a marriage proposal from the man when had been dating for five years.  My first thought was the phrase,  the real thing…

The Real Thing

The real thing…. (echo)
The real thing… (echo)
The real thing… (echo)

If you really want to know,
I want to have a love that shows,
not a love you need to hide,
or a love that you keep inside.
I guess I want the real thing,
the kind of love that makes you sing
even when it pours down rain,
or when your’re feeling any pain.
I guess I want the real thing.

If you really want to know,
I want to have a love that grows,
not a loves that remains the same
or a love played with silly games.
I guess I want the real thing,
the kind of love that deserves a ring,
one that will last the rest of life,
one that involves you as my wife.
I guess I want the real thing.

(break strain)
The real thing is something I can
see, taste, hear, smell and touch.
The real thing is something I know
I need to have you so very much.
The real thing is having people
That belong part of your family.
The real thing is being loved
With the comforts of security.
The real thing…. (echo)
The real thing… (echo)
The real thing… (echo)

If you really want to know,
I want to have a love that shows,
not a love you need to hide,
or a love that you keep inside.
I guess I want the real thing,
the kind of love that makes you sing
even when it pours down rain,
or when you’re feeling any pain.
I guess I want the real thing.
