The Girl Next Door

The girl next door was a friend of mine,
And our love for each other was hard to find.
I remember her face. Her smile was so kind.
I could hardly keep her off my mind, but
I was young then, and my love was blind.
Well I’m married now and I love my wife,
And have two children who love me, too;
But times I look at the kids growing up,
And my heart starts to feel a little blue
Because when I was young, I was in love
With the girl next door.

The girl next door was a friend of mine,
And our love for each other was hard to find.
I remember her face. Her smile was so kind.
I could hardly keep her off my mind, but
I was young then, and my love was blind.

We had just moved in, and I was 9 or 8,
I can’t remember now, but it was my fate.
She might have had curly blonde hair,
And we shared a squeaky backyard gate.
It was so long ago, I can’t think of her name,
But I loved her and she loved me the same.
I would be going her house to play games,
I was sad when the day we moved came,
Because when I was young, I was in love
With the girl next door.

The girl next door was a friend of mine,
And our love for each other was hard to find.
I remember her face. Her smile was so kind.
I could hardly keep her off my mind, but
I was young then, and my love was blind.

I didn’t want to leave, but Dad had to go,
I can’t really remember why, though.
I never saw her again as I grew up,
But the memories of her are so bold.
There have been other girls since then,
But the first one is the only one when
I could say I really had a girlfriend.
I didn’t want the good times to end
Because when I was young, I was in love
With the girl next door.

The girl next door was a friend of mine,
And our love for each other was hard to find.
I remember her face. Her smile was so kind.
I could hardly keep her off my mind, but
I was young then, and my love was blind.

My baby girl is cute and turning 10.
She says at school she has a boyfriend.
As a dad, I’m not sure how this will end,
Because when I was young, I was in love
With the girl next door.

The girl next door was a friend of mine,
And our love for each other was hard to find.
I remember her face. Her smile was so kind.
I could hardly keep her off my mind, but
I was young then, and my love was blind.
