LSC Fraternity to get new woman member?

Karen Ladonnavich

Woman real estate executive sponsored for membership in unofficial Lambda Sigma Chi fraternity

For the first time in its history, the unofficial Lambda Sigma Chi fraternity at the World of words by Elias Tobias is considering a woman to be included in its ranks. One of first LSC brother Adrian parker has established himself as a major contributor to the website, and with this nomination, has suggested the all-male fraternity has become more like a professional or honorary type of fraternity.  Parker argued that if the boy scouts can allow girls in cub scouts and females in that organization’s leadership, then the Lambda Sigma Chi’s could include a qualified female.

Parker has nominated Karen Ladonnavich, a real estate executive and manager for a major real estate company with an office in Peoria, Ill., where Parker has been an insurance agency since the 1990’s.  He has successfully built up his agency to the point where he and his wife and four children from their marriage and past marriages have moved to a new house, brokered of course, by Ladonnavich.  By now, most of the children have moved away and started their own families.  The new residence has become “grandpa’s house” and Adrian his considering an early retirement to play the new role as a grandparent.

Parker and Ladonnavich are members of a Peoria -area chapter of an organization called BNI, that stands for Businesses Networking International, which thrives on its members referring business to each other, and the referrals are measured in dollars.  Over the years, the homes Ladonnavich has sold were sometimes insured by Parker’s business, and Parker brought her new clients as well.  As members, they got to know each other as friends and he discovered her hobby of writing poetry.  After a review of her work and other later discussions, Parker has made a formal nomination to include her as a member of the unofficial Lambda Sigma Chi fraternity.

Copies of her portfolio of work have been sent to the other members of the Lambda Sigma Chi fraternity, and the work will be considered for two months.  By the first week of July, the vote of the membership will decide if the all-male group will have its first female member.

World of Words site to celebrate 20th anniversary

World of Words site to celebrate 20th anniversary

Poet Elias Tobias will celebrate 20 years of continuous presence on the Internet with his World of Words poetry blog, and series of articles will appear in 2018 throughout the year on the web site and other social media. The format has changed and features expanded, but the main purpose has been maintained as a forum to promote the poetry by Elias Tobias ().
Archives of more than 2500 posts from poems, photographs and short stories in English, French, Spanish and even Arabic are available since 2007 when the blog went to a Word Press format after its initial beginnings with Tripod.com in 1998. All this time, access to the website has been free, even though attempts at advertising through Google did not turn out as expected.
A new logo has been designed to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the World of Words by Elias Tobias, and two weekly posts on social media, the Poem of the Week, which reposts previously published posts, will continue on Mondays and on Fridays, a new poem will continue to be published. Other social media outlets include Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and Pinterest accounts, and the new logo will appear on posts on The World of Words by Elias Tobias along with these media and press releases.
Elias Tobias uses the website as a base to launch the sales of two published books, an anthology of 145 poems called, “Figments of My Reality” and a short story murder mystery, “Five Aces.” Both books came out in July of 2013 and are published by AuthorHouse, Inc. Information on the purchase of these books can be found at http://eliastobiasbooks.weebly.com/. The books are also available on Amazon.com and other retail book sellers.
Elias Tobias is the pen name of Michael D. Hall, a former business journal editor for the Laredo Morning Times. Hall has been writing short stories and poetry since his childhood. It was creative writing, and an interest in photography, which lead him to get two degrees in photojournalism and work with publications around the country. A graduate of Ball State University, He has also worked as an educator in Texas and Indiana, a certified computer technician and other positions which inspire his creative writing.

Concert version of Next Flight

Concert version of Next Flight

animatedbabygrandpiano1.GIFOut of the hundreds of poems I have written, one of the more special poems is “Next Flight”  since it is the only one of my poems that I know for sure was made into a song.  The music was written by Michael Albright during my first year at Ball State University.  He was one of my roommates that year, and the summer of the lat first year, he died in a traffic accident.  The more detailed story and a video I made a while back is available at Next Flight: the Song.

I decided to make a concert version as if he was alive to sing the song to hundreds of people, and this is what I finished up with.  It is not stereo since the master was recorded on a cassette recorder I got from the BSU library.

To hear this version, click on the link below. It will take you another page, and then click on the link again. A dialogue box will appear asking to play the file in .wma format, the regular music format for windows systems (The MP3 version took too much space to load here.)   If you like it, you can download it, too, for free and send it to your friends.

Steps to make a website- the Sequel

Steps to make a website- the Sequel

poeticallyspeaking-logo3.jpg

It is time for another sequel.  On Oct. 20, 2008, I had a post that has been seen by hundreds of people.  It was “How to have a free poetry blog in three easy steps or claiming your homestead on the wild frontier of the Internet.”  Things have changed in 7 years, beside the Poetically Speaking logo.  I was surprised by the overwhelming response to this original article, and especially it was adapted for other purposes. It became a guide for those starting web sites.
So it’s here I will begin, with the World of Words  by Elias Tobias at 15 years of consecutive, continuous (except for technical problems) service on the Internet, now rated as one of the top 400,000 websites in the world. I have 45 videos on YouTube with my own channel, and have published two books based on previously released material from WOW.

Civilization of the Frontier Internet
Your Internet website may have survived the homestead requirements through the dry summers and the cold winters.  Like the Little House on the Prairie show, western life has become civilized.  Cabins have converted to larger homes, along with more kids, probably.  Towns have grown with all manner of businesses, schools, and train stations.  They maybe rough around the edges, but the modern websites are part of a network of towns and cities with telephones and electric light, and even motorcars.   Like I said, a lot has changed in 7 years.  Cowboys are a dying breed along with the Pony Express.
While actual website creation has become simpler and more practical through changes in programs and all-in-one website companies, the challenge is to keep with the sophisticated social networking required to support and maintain such a site, for whatever purpose, personal, charitable or for business.  Information needs to be audio and visual, and has to come in the form of photography, how-videos, and audio podcasts.
It’s important to continue to refresh the  of  information on the website, as mentioned in the original article, but today different tools are needed to keep the audience coming back using Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, LinkedIn and other social media tools.  There is a thing called bounce rate, and the higher the rate, the less time people are staying on your site. The goal is to make them want to stay once you finally have them there.  More and more business is getting to the markets through social media.

Getting started
A number of web builders are available, and one source has listed the top ten at http://www.top10bestwebsitebuilders.com.    Another site has 37 website builders at https://iwantmyname.com/services/website-builder/   I have worked with Homestead, number 10 on the list.    Blue Voda at http://www.bluevoda.com/ claims you can make a website in 30 minutes or less, and it’s free.  I have worked with them, but I may have spent more than half and hour getting started.  More bells and whistles cost more, and many of these sites offer hosting services, mobile sites, e-mail accounts, domain registration, Search Engine Optimization (SEO) tools, payment systems for ordering products, networking assistance, expanded memory, and most of all prepared templates with artwork included.  These templates can be customized to suit the purpose of the website.   You can do your own research, but the mystery of making website has been solved.   It may not be always free, though.  Choosing your website builder depends on what it offers compared to what you want to do … kind of like choosing the right kind of saloon to go to on Saturday night.  The upscale places with the best whiskey charge a bit more.

Impact of Social Media and networking
I cannot claim to be an expert in the ins and outs of social media.  People are hired by big business to do just that and books have been written about this topic.  One such author is Erik Deckers : co-authored “The Owned Media Doctrine” (summer 2013); co-authored “No Bullshit Social Media: The All-Business, No-Hype Guide to Social Media Marketing” (Pearson, 2011); co-authored “Branding Yourself: How to Use Social Media to Invent or Reinvent Yourself” (Pearson, 2010; 2nd ed., 2012.)
There is one thing I do know.  A website by itself will not survive the first dry spell on the prairie.  Early settlers grew to really know their neighbors and soon a community of support was created.  The nearest neighbor may have been two or three miles away then.  Today, you neighbor may be thousands of miles away, but thanks to technology, it might as well be a mile down the road.
Another thing I know is that the media is not just words.  It’s photographs, the bigger, the better. Videos can be made with common PC Movie programs and videos shot from smartphones or small digital cameras.  Still pages can be created from photos and words from desktop publishing programs like Print Shop, and put in sequence to non-copyrighted music downloaded from YouTube.
One thing I have experienced with the World of Words by Elias Tobias and another site I have, Borntobeintexas.tripod.com, both main informational sites have companion product or company Facebook pages.  New WOW posts are put on the Facebook page, and changes in the BTBIT site are mentioned.  LinkedIn is good to use, too.  I have a WOW LinkedIn page and links to sites and book videos on the Michael Hall LinkedIn page.   Some have asked me to get into Twitter, but have yet to set up an account.
Somehow the BTBIT Facebook page required a regular personal page, too.   All this is enough for me to handle, but those who go beyond Twitter may consider using Pinterest as an additional avenue with social media.   Part of a websites rating on some Internet sources is the active use of social media as part of the media networking.   A fresh presentation on alternate pages can bring people to your website.    As mentioned in the original article, free press releases can be a valuable tool to get the word out, and if possible have your press releases in the “news” section of the website.
My efforts to gain book sales has led me to Amazon.com, which offers special pages for authors to create biographies and other information to help sell the books, and this is free as long as the book has an ISBN code.  If you have print materials for download, the use of QR codes will help. those with QR code readers on their smartphones can instant get information imbedded in the code, like URLs or product information.  Go to https://www.unitaglive.com/qrcode to get started with this.
For those people with a few thousands of dollars to spare, places like EMSI Public Relations, are pay for performance public relations firms,  they have national print campaigns, interviews on talk radio, arrange local and national TV appearances, and social marketing.
Far from the ranch, people who want to make an impact on their websites to potential viewer need to get the suit on and checkout who’s who at the Country Club just long enough to know who know better, and then invite them for a Sunday dinner at the house.

Meanwhile, back at the ranch
So you think you are ready to get into the sophisticated world of websites, but it is important to know that the basics are intact, with the 1-3-5 layer of thought.  1 is the main purpose of the website. Write it out. Make is simple. Why go through all the hassle to mess around with a site to begin with, unless you are exactly sure, or the design, the content material and the publicity will not flow.   Oh, there’s the three, the design, the content material and the publicity.  Have a good idea what you want to do and then go to these all-in-one places to get the site operational.
5…5.  These are the ongoing things that will sustain your website once it’s launched.  How will you keep new material or information or sale items  up front  or of there is nothing new read in less than a second, your audience is gone to the next site.  These items will change with the years, the season, or the day, and relate ultimately back to your main purpose.

The Future?
The frontier cabin Internet site is more than a homestead.  You have braved the elements and established yourself, but towns and cities have grown along with the size of your cabin. Families tend to grow.  This means going to town to shop and order items from foreign territories.  Items come by train now.  Civilization has followed you and you need to use it to promote your site through social marketing. What is the future?  Ford and a few others have something going with these automobiles.  Miles and miles of paved roads from coast to coast? It would be nice to get these telephones small enough to carry around in your pocket, too.  Just roll with it and see where you go.

Thanksgiving Alternatives by Thurgood, the Thanksgiving Duck

Thanksgiving Alternatives by Thurgood, the Thanksgiving Duck

Interview with Thurgood, the Thanksgiving Duck

Thanksgiving, a tradition expanded over the world, is a time for people to come to the table to enjoy the blessing of the season, but Thurgood, the Thanksgiving Duck, pictured above, believes this celebration does not have to include a serving of turkey.  The World of Words by Elias Tobias has an exclusive interview with this spokesperson of alternatives of the main course.
WOW:  What’s wrong with having Turkey for Thanksgiving?
Thurgood: Nothing, unless you are the turkey being served. Quack.  Quack.
WOW: I guess so, but Thanksgiving is a big deal to families.  Every year, it seems at most Thanksgiving dinners, there are just a few cooks, like a Mom and Grandmother, who cook everything for the whole gang.  It’s a lot of work, even when the sisters help out.  The rest of the relatives just watch TV and have a few drinks.
Thurgood:  That’s one of the problems.  Why should one or two people try to cook everything?  You know some people start to prepare for days before the big event, just so everything can be served all at once.
WOW:  You know what they say about too many cooks in the kitchen.
Thurgood:  Yeah, I know.   Not much gets done.  But other people can bring part of the meal.  I mean a Thanksgiving Potluck is a great idea.  Each family is assigned something, and each person has his or her specialty item.  My grandma made the best pies around. Most people will be happy to contribute. They fill that void of being needed other than just eating it all the food.
WOW:  And if someone can’t cook very well, they can bring drinks, silverware, plates and  even extra tables or chairs.
Thurgood:  You get the idea.  Make it a real family and friend event.
WOW:  Let’s get back to the main dish.
Thurgood:  How about Pork Roast?  I checked on the Internet and startcooking.com has ten alternatives to turkey.  They start out with Pork Roast.  Ham is great too. When buying a ham, make sure it says fully-cooked somewhere on the packaging. This means that all you’re doing is heating the thing up!
WOW:  What are some other ideas?
Thurgood:  Chicken, as in Roasted Chicken , or maybe Turkey Cutlets.  I know it’s still turkey, but they are a lot easier to prepare.  Who says you can’t serve fish on Thanksgiving.  How about  Baked Cod or microwaved Salmon.  All these ideas are in this article I mentioned.
WOW:  That’s impressive.  What other wild ideas are there?
Thurgood:  Eggplant Parmesan, anyone?  Beef Stew is a hearty alternative, too.  Leg of Lamb can be served instead of Turkey.  I mentioned pies, before, but how about Spaghetti Pie along with Pumpkin Pie or Pecan?  Go out on a limb for Thanksgiving.
WOW:  You have some good ideas.  We checked out the Internet, too, and Oprah has a page about duck.
Thurgood: Duck. Really.  Are you serious?
WOW:  Yes with side dishes like Balsamic-Glazed Brussels Sprouts with Bacon and Bread Crumbs, Roasted Carrots, Pearl Onions and Wild Mushrooms with Tarragon, Candied Yams with Homemade Marshmallows, Fresh Cranberry Relish and for desert, Sweet Potato and Pecan Pie with Cinnamon Cream.
Thurgood: The side dishes sound good, but the main dish, I don’t know.
WOW:  You want people to consider otheralternatives besides Turkey, don’t you?
Thurgood:  Yeah, but Duck? I feel like a Turkey all of a sudden.  I looked on the Internet and found a better alternative.  Cornish hens.  Each person has their own bird.  I found it at foodandwine.com.
Wow: Well, no matter how you look at it, the big Turkey baste is not always the answer to the main meal for Thanksgiving, and we thank Thurgood, the Thanksgiving Duck, for helping us out today with alternatives for the main course.
Thurgood:  I appreciate your interest in this topic, but personally would not advise Duck as the best way to go, if you know what I mean.
