To My Son

A poem by Brother Paul Abernathy

To My Son

On this important day, you are 21,
And you are my legacy, my only son.
By law, you’re now your own man,
And you need to know where to stand.

There is much you’ve already learned,
But I have pause to be concerned.
There is much more you need to know.
These are lessons learned as you get old.

I know it’s just a matter of time that
Leaving here will come to your mind.
Soon you’ll go and live on your own, and
then a woman will come to your home.

Choices made now affect the rest of your life,
And only one woman will ever be your wife.
You can still have lots of fun along the way.
Love is a real game we all have to play.

Enjoy the this party tonight and drink some beers,
And then the next morning will soon be here.
Tomorrow’s another day, and you’ll be your own man.
If you stumble and need help, I’ll do whatever I can.
