Editor’s Note: This poem is not written in defense of drug abuse, illegal drugs or actions taken by people under the influence of drugs. Instead, it is an attempt by this author to get in the place of an addict based on numerous media reports which seem to daily indicate a growing problem of drug abuse in this country.
One day I was sick, very ill, and
the doctor prescribed potent pills.
I need them; couldn’t get my fill, and
I can’t get enough of them still.
They seem to take away my will.
I started stealing to pay the bills.
Then my gun was for me to kill those
who tried to stop me from my pills.

Wave after wave of terrorism, disease, and hunger
and drug abuse erodes the sand of the American beaches.
People run to the water to cool themselves from
the hot sand and blowing wind. Riptides of
historically reoccurring problems of domestic violence,
crime, discrimination and poverty never seem
to reach the water’s surface, and they flow parallel to
the beach, pulling people under the water unexpectedly.
Even the best of swimmers suffer, and
some even drown as heroes. The politicians in lifeguard
suits proclaim something should be done about those
wanting help, but they debate and argue about how to do
it while soaking in the sun in the elevated towers on the
beach. Decisions are rarely made as their tans get darker
The beach itself is not that safe because medical waste
from the polluted water rolls on shore and shells
are not the only things in the sand that are sharp.
Sunglasses help change the depth of perception,
but the view never changes. The problems still
exist and not much is done to correct them.
