The Texas Ranger

A poem by Brother Christopher Benedict

The Texas Ranger

Up before the day has begun, he puts on his
hat as he walks out of the door. The morning
sun glows over the horizon and the open land
is warmed, minute by minute, with the heat.
The rider mounts and leaves, with the hooves
of the horse to keep the beat of the trail.
Twin guns bounce by his side, and they protect
any attempts to question his sense of pride.
There were times at the Bucking Bronco Saloon
that justice was served at the bar, especially
when, in popular cases, it was courtroom.
The Ranger has his days in court, even
when there were no cases scheduled for the day.
But in the morning he rides to follow the truth,
when bad meant bad, good was good, and
justice had a way of branding it’s own man.
