Five Percent

Five Percent

Life is five percent how
You make it and
95 percent how you take it.
Walk through life with a plan,
but be as flexible as you can.
I’ve had many goals in mind,
and I’ve done several things.
With all these experiences I
find knowledge books could
never bring.
Look for your advantages as
you walk along your path.
Set the stage, move the lights,
be prepared to take a chance.
The opportunities for success
are there for those who can see.
The blind won’t believe unless
the past is buried in concrete.

The place to be

The place to be

I went to this executive restaurant
For lunch one day just for fun.
And after I placed an order
I held a receipt for order 141.
The service was so quick
my order was delivered up
before I could finish putting on
the cap of my large plastic cup.
There were plenty of seats,
With booth tables clean and neat.
Old friends see each other there at a
place where the elite gather to meet.
The music in the background was
Soothing for my ears to hear,
And I felt content, rested and I
Really had nothing to fear.
The food was real good since
I went there very hungry.
I can see why others say to me
that this is the place to be.

To be a Friend

To be a Friend

Sometimes it’s hard to be a friend.
Perhaps you won’t see them again.
There is a risk which you take
when you fight the hands of fate.

Sometimes it’s hard to be a friend.
They want more than you can lend.
They say friendship costs, but
I’d tell them to get lost.

Sometimes it’s hard to be a friend.
They can hurt you in the end.
They can be your worst enemy,
when the sheep-skined wolf bares teeth.

Sometimes it hurts to have a friend.
It’s hard to leave them in the end.
There is no use to apologize
since the truth is hidden between the lies.

Sometimes it hurts to have a friend.
With a lot of heat from the heart
It’s hard to make steel bend.
there’s a chance the hate will part.

Fancy Dancer

Fancy Dancer

Fancy dancer, fancy dancer
move your body around. some more.
Fancy dancer, fancy dancer
show me the key to your door.
Fancy dancer, fancy dancer,
let’s make love on the floor.
Fancy dancer, fancy dancer
I know you’ve loved other men.
Fancy dancer, fancy dancer
could you love me more than
you have loved any of them?

Lambda Sigma Chi Fraternity initiate new member

The brothers of Lambda Sigma Chi Fraternity featured on the World of Words by Elias Tobias, had a 10-year reunion in Indianapolis in December.  Adrian Parker, Bill Kelso, Paul Abernathy, C.J. Chatham III, Rufus McDougal, Christopher Benedict and new member Karl Dobson brought their families for a two-day get together and to meet the pledge who was initiated into fraternity -Brian Kohut.

brian-kohut.jpg       Brian Kohut is sponsored by Brother C.J. Chatham, III. Kohut has worked with him on several occasions on a professional level. Kohut is from New Jersey, but now has office in Philadelphia. Pa., for last 18 or so years. He was in the U.S. Army with a Special Forces unit after high school and in military service for about 16 years, until an injury in Bosnia shattered his right knee and he was honorably discharged.  Much of his past is classified, but he went to a community college and earned Associates Degree, on G.I. Bill for Criminal Investigations while he worked security for several firms.  Kohut received his Private Investigator’s license and began his business.  He has since gone on to get a masters degree in criminology.

Kohut is a health advocate, like exercises- especially. Bicycling and also skiing. He met C.J.  Chatham at a vacation while skiing in Vermont in 2006. Kohut likes to cook, especially making healthy meals lower in fat and carbs from older favorite recipes.  Kohut likes cooking shows for this reason and has taken a few classes to be a better cook.  Also likes wine, in moderation.

Kohut is divorced, and has one child, a teenage daughter, who has lived with him past three years. Daughter, Dalia (DOB 1994) was in mother’s custody for one year.  Brian met Stephanie , his wife, when he was recuperating from knee surgery (1991-92) and then both of them were going to the same community college. They married in 1993 after knowing each other for 1 year.  They divorced in 2005 after 12 years of marriage.  The time spent with his job took its toll on the union.

Rev. Paul Abernathy to start column on World of Words

Rev. Paul Abernathy, one of the founders and original members of  unofficial Lambda Sigma Chi Fraternity at Ball State University, will be starting a column, “All Things Considered,” as part of the World of Words this year.  His columns will appear on Saturday of each week, if the copy comes in on time.

After nearly three years in a new blog format and up to seven posts a week, The World of Words will not publish any posts Thursday. The number of poems in the catalog of work by Elias Tobias not already posted has been reduced, and the two-day reduction will ensure enough poems will be posted for the whole year.  Thursday’s poems in 2009 were largely those previously published, but those are now a part of the online collection.  The multi-national translations will continue along with poetry from the Boys from the Lambda Sigma Chi fraternity.  Friday will have the photo posting as in 2009.

“A New Start” Theme for January

January is the first month of the year, a time of resolutions and later in the Spring, rebirth.  It’s all about starting over. Out with old ways and implementing something new and hopefully, better. I’ve started over with new jobs, new locations, almost as if I’ve reinvented myself to fit the situation. It begins with the start of a new year.

The theme of poetry for the month of January 2010 is “A New Start,” for all daily posts.

Ghosts

Ghosts

The clouds gather in the east as the sun sets in the west,
And a slight breeze rocks an old weathered rocking
Chair on the porch of a large log cabin.
Trees, which could tell stories of the past, surround the
Century-old structure.
A fish jumps in a nearby lake and it’s splash
Ripples across the crisp autumn air.
Apparitions visit the empty home as a kerosene lamp
Mysteriously illuminates the interior of the living room
The sounds of dry wood crackle in the crude ash-filled
Stone fireplace while no flame glows.
Footsteps creak on the wide porch as a screen door
Squeaks due to years of rust and bad maintenance.
A tiny voice cries in the night inside a small adjacent
Room and an old-fashioned cradle keeps the rhythm of
The rocking chair on the porch.
A pane-less window in the room stays open, no matter how
Many times a person would try to close it.
By daybreak, the sun light streaks through the window,
And the coals in the fireplace are still warm.

Shoes

Shoes

Working shoes…
black, tan, brown, don’t mind the
rain or a little dirt.  It doesn’t hurt.
It helps because money will be there
at the end of the week so the family
can eat.  The soles feed the souls.

Tennis shoes…
 Sport shoes, cross trainers with
 color and understood logos run
with the wind and defeat those
who are slow.  The winners know
 which shoes are the best.

Sandals…
are part-time shoes.  They save the
tender toes from hot sand or sharp
little stones as feet go down the
street.  When not in use, they are
tossed on the floor, to be found again.

Cowboy boots…
ropers for wranglers or dress boots
for dancing, step to the ways of the
West.  Like a horse, they need to be
broke in, and then the saddle fits
for life.  Cowboys die with them on.

Combat boots…
regardless of color, help keep the
world safe.   Mud and blood, sweat
and death can stain the leather as
 boots travel through forests and
deserts.  They can be good friends.

Blue Suede shoes…
 or red shoes, high-heeled shoes,
 and bright white shoes celebrate
the happy times in life when people
get together with family and friends.
They get lonely in corner of the
closet when they have no parties
 to attend.

House shoes…
the bunny hoppers or leather slip-ons
keep the feet warm on the cold nights
when the winds blow the snow over
the land.  Hop hop to the table for
another cup of hot chocolate, and
everyone seems to have a good time.

Anymore

Anymore

The walls start closing in,
and my life is just beginning.
The pressure ominously forms,
and my life is just beginning.
The demand for living grows,
and my life is just beginning.
I see that people notice me,
and my life is just beginning.
I can see through people,
and my life is just beginning.
I touch my responsibilities
and my life is just beginning.
I’m not what I was anymore.

Stars

Stars

The stars are witnesses above
As they look down upon our love.
They see our relationship
Grow more and more each day.
It seems like it was always this way.
There were times in my past,
When love didn’t last, and the
Stars weren’t bright enough to see.
Maybe they were always there,
But it really didn’t matter to me.
I was too busy living my life,
And I couldn’t see them until
You said you’d be my wife.
