Reader’s support appreciated

The daily count of unique visitors remains both high and constant with 1.2 million readers in May and the daily page view count has increased more than doubling the daily unique visitor rate. When 1.4 million people come to the World of Words by Elias Tobias, this means that there are 16.2 readers per second are logging on to the poetry blog.  I’m not sure what part body the .2 of a person is, but I hope it becomes whole person soon. These numbers are great and we hope the trend continues throughout the summer months.  If you have any comments to make, please go to contact@eliastobias.net.

Still time to vote for photographs for Indianapolis book

The Indianapolis Star and a group of partners and sponsors are working together on CaptureIndy, a photography project to reflect what the city and the surrounding areas have to offer.  There are 8 chapters or categories for the photos, and I have more than 25 photos entered in this contest.

The end result will be a coffee table-style book and all those who enter photos will be given a CD of all the photos submitted.  Those images published in the book will be chosen by a few photo editors and the viewing public via the Internet.   The book will go to press around October, so you can vote often over the next two months.

So I need your votes. I’ve done the hard works.  Just to go http:// www.captureindy.com/people/mhall7175 and get to my page.  Look at the thumbnail photos, and click on any picture. Then the full photo will appear and you can cast your vote for that photo with the click of your mouse. After votong for one photo, you can click on other photos by Mike Hall and vote for them. You may have to register with CaptureIndy to make the vote or votes stick.  There are other pictures from other photographers to check out, too.

Be a cut above in your kitchen

I have a former Engish 111 student who has  become an authorized Cutco Cutlery distributor, and after seeing her practice demonstration, Jordan Crosby asked me for more references. I said I have a web site. I didn’t need any new kitchen knives at the time, but the knives are sharp and so is her presentation. Back to the Basics

The use of the older poetry was such a big hit that the same theme will be used for July. The poems  I wrote in high school and the  first years of college, especially the ones that were published, will be put on the web blog.  Some daily blogs will contain several poems, since the older works are typically shorter. Each week this month will feature at least four poems per week: a Spanish poem, unpublished poems, and a previously published poem, linked to the publishing credits. The publishing credits history page has been updated so that poems already on the web blog are now easily accessible, and as the older published poems appear, links to these poems will be set to the poems listed in the publishing credits.

write_on1.jpg    Poem of the Month

These eyes

These eyes have been a witness to
the best and worst of what people bring.
The capacity to care and give has exceeded
some people’s material possessions and means.
But here are others who sanitize their sanity, and
stay clean of touching lives of their fellow man.
Charity is not the act of giving something for a hope
of some return; it’s helping another person stand
on their own two feet, and giving them food to eat.
It’s an activity that doesn’t happen at Christmastime.
It’s something people should often repeat.

These eyes have been a witness to
the best and worst of what people bring.
Two people look at each other, and feelings grow
into a relationship promised by wedding rings.
Then over the years, the feelings start to fade, and
the damage continues even after the divorce.
They say there is the other woman or man, but
The problem really stems from another source,
the feelings of jealously or bad communication.
They key to successful long-term affairs is not sex,
but a sense of respect without any conditions.

These eyes have been a witness to
the best and worst of what people bring.
When special groups or nations can’t solve
their differences, they fight for their king,
and for property, for commerce, for a god,
and others who died. The only solution is a war,
and any resolution for a peaceful deal is used
as a stalling weapon as soldiers go out the door.
Men and machine guns step in ankle –deep mud,
blood and bodies as they rush to take a strategic hill.
their answer to the solution is to kill, kill, kill.

These eyes have been a witness to
the best and worst of what people do and say.
There are problems which need to be solved,
but for each one, there is more than one way
to arrive at the best alternative; and the secret
to the solution is how much people want to give.

Blast from the Past

With major films hitting the theaters, like the new Star Trek movie, taking a look back at the past and examining how characters got to the present, I will have a month or two of my own prequel at the World of Words by Elias Tobias. The poems I wrote in high school and the first years of college, especially the ones that were published, will be put on the web blog.  Some daily blogs will contain several poems, since the older works are typically shorter.

The time to re-tool the web site took several days, so there were a few missed days last month that would have normally had posts.  I apologize for those  days. Also I have started a new full-time job, different than anything I’ve done before, and the time to get trained for it has left a few gaps in daily posts.  However, each week this month will feature at least four poems per week: a Spanish poem, unpublished poems, and a previously published poem, linked to the publishing credits.

The publishing credits history page has been updated so that poems already on the web blog are now easily accessible, and as the older published poems appear, links to these poems will be set to the poems listed in the publishing credits.

Theme for month is people and places

There is a saying that goes something like, “Who you are is where you are.”  This where includes a physical component, as well as well as a mental condition. Who you are also implies dealing with the present or the immediate future.  As the popularity of Twitter goes, a nation is excited about what a person is doing now in 140 characters or less, and the thoughts are recorded or broadcast for all to see. Then the moment changes. Who you are with changes, and these changes correspond to where you are.  It’s all about people and places.  That is the poetry theme for May.

New record set for new visitors, pageviews

A new record of more than 5.5 million unique visitors came to the World of Words by Elias Tobias on April 10, and these people had more than 12.5 million pageviews, setting another record for the poetry blog.  The numbers were a great improvement of the three previous days, which had no activity.

Tobias said this probably due to a problem with the tracking code with the blogging website (the site doing the tracking) on the poetry website. The characters for the code were changing, once imported into the poetry website, and for those days with no activity, a code without a tracking number was used. Once the old code was used, the tracking was working.  Since that day with the higher views, the numbers have returned to a normal pattern of more than one million unique visitors daily and 2.5 million daily page views.

“This shows that a goal of an average of 2 million average daily unique visitors is possible by the end of the year,”
Tobias said.

New poetry book started- Boys of Lambda Sigma Chi

In my first year of college at Ball State University, I got to know a group of writers and poets that pledged to keep in touch and maintain each of the talents. To make it “unofficial,” we decided to create an unchartered fraternity called Lambda Sigma Chi. We do, however, have a secret handshake and code of honor. It has one chapter and the the six original members are still alive and corresponding with our creative writing.  Throughout this month, I’ll introduce the other members of Lambda Sigma Chi and selections of their poetry along with their backgrounds of where they are now and what they have been doing the last 25 or so years. The other brothers are Adrian Parker, Bill Kelso, Paul Abernathy, C.J. Chatham III, Rufus McDougal and Christopher Benedict. Go Lambda Sigs.

Editors Note: Since the release of this newsletter, we have learned that there really is a Lambda Sigma Chi organization, a national service sorority. However, there are no chapters of this organization listed with Greek organizations at Ball State University. So the boys and I will keep on going, like we have the past 30 or so years, with all respect for the real Greek group. We just want to share our writings.

Sun Spots

Scientists say they saw spots on the sun, and
changes in the solar system have begun.
High energy bands will alter their course
Due to the strong electro-magnetic force.
There will be changes throughout the night,
And even during the day, however slight.
My brain will feel different, too
For the power shift will make me do
Things that are not usually done.
My day at work could really be fun,
Or the radio waves could help me smile
Or encourage me to get the phone and dial
Someone I haven’t talked to in a long time.
I could write a poem that rhymes, but
Changes take a while to get to earth
Since other planets absorb the blast first.
My life will remain as the same routine,
And sun spots aren’t really a big deal,
Just something I read in the newspaper
After I finished eating my evening meal.

Poetry theme for April is growth
As the start of spring in the form of plants reaching through the soil, people can grow in spirit and health this month.  Poetry can help people feel good about themselves.  With this in mind, the poetry theme for April on the World of Words by Elias Tobias is growth.

Journey of life is poetry theme

The journey is the poetry theme for March 2009.  There is a saying that goes something like this: life isn’t about waiting for the storm to pass; it is about learning to dance in the rain.  In Indiana, there is rain, snow, and everything in between. The journey is making choices and the most of the conditions, no matter the weather.

Winds of Change

Dried lifeless leaves from the fall
circle in the air as a strong wind
           swirls the past around.
For a moment, the wind stops, but
soon repeats the cyclone cycle
several times.
The warm sunlight stirs the convection
from the ground that a week ago
was covered in 12 inches of snow.
The rain came yesterday and washed
away the pain from the cracking
sidewalks.
No one seems to know what will happen
next, except for the weatherman, who plays
the odds with God.

Elias Tobias celebrates Obama’s  inauguration with poem
Elias Tobias has written a poem to celebrate the inauguration of the 44th President of the United State Barack Obama.  The poem, called, “Waiting for the Moment” is on the poet’s web blog , The World of Words by Elias Tobias at eliastobias.net.
This poem is different than most poems written by the author.
“Most of my poems are without a particular person named, and exact locations and circumstances are not usually defined. Also this poem is longer than most, but due to the nature of the subject, the length is justified.  This poem is unusual for me because of the subject matter. Most of the time, politics and poetry don’t go together.  This is about an unusual person in an unusual time historically, economically and globally. Besides, I can break my rules I make, sometimes,” Tobias noted on the web blog.
The poem is included the “Color My World” book or category on the World of Words.  “Color My World” is one of several collections or books available on the web blog, and placement of” Waiting for the Moment” is the best book for the poem, Tobias said.

Register cell phone numbers on the national Do Not Call List
All cell phone numbers are being released to telemarketing companies next month and you will start to receive sale calls. You will be charged for these calls.  To prevent this, call the following number from your cell phone: 888-382-1222. It is the National Do Not Call list.

It will only take a minute of your time. It blocks your number for five (5) years. You must call from the cell phone number you want to have blocked. You cannot call from a different phone number. It takes about 20 seconds.

What is your inspiration for writing?

Any creative art, including poetry, does not exist without that spark of creativity.  Where does it come from?  For me, the poet is a story teller always looking for something to say.  The”report” is not a story in a journalistic sense with a rush of a deadline.  The best poems for me grow until I have the opportunity to get them into words, and this process can take days, weeks or even months, depending on the concept.
Inspiration comes from the least expected nugget of gold found in the sands of time, but the product of the inspiration is a fragile thing that quickly disappears in the stream of life’s activities.  I get up in the middle of the night to scribble something down that finally reaches the part of my brain that forces me to get the words out or go crazy.
What is your inspiration for writing?  Let me know.  Send an e-mail to contact(at)eliastobias(dot)net.

The Brightest Star

You get a chance to see the world,
and then you want it all.
You act like a conquering hero,
but get ready for the big fall.
History repeats itself for those
who are too blind to see
the books written by the scribes
for all of us to read
When you think you’re all alone,
and nothing seems to be right,
Just remember I’ll be with you, wanting
to hold you throughout the night.
All you need a little more time,
and you will find out who you are.
I’ll be waiting for you patiently
in the night sky as the brightest star.

Happy New Year!

Howdy from Elias Tobias and Patty,
It’s time to change the calendars around the house and the office.  A new year is upon us.  Plans have been penciled on  the calendar dates, but there is time for those events to be changed.  The theme for this month will be a new year, with all its potential and uncertainty.

People have lost jobs and other fear for loss of employment.  I will continue to teach at Ivy Tech in the Spring Semester and start to take classes to work toward requirements for continued employment.  The good news is the college will pay for the classes, eventually.  I just have to pass the classes first.  Learning is a good thing. Patty is comfortable with her job, the reason we can back to Indiana.  The cold weather has been a significant adjustment compared to Laredo, Texas.  I just buy more coats and sweaters.
As far as the the World of Words by Elias Tobias goes, I will continue the things that seem to work, including the Spanish poems, Palabras de Inspracioñ, and add new things, like Mike’s Book Cafe, and the Trivia Quiz. Older features, such as the Open Poetry Forum, the International Poetry Link Exchange, free posters and videos on You Tube will continue to complete the web blog.

Behind the Christmas card

There is a picture of a large house
and cars in front, all covered in snow,
and the multi-color lights on the house
and in the lawn put on a  grand show,
but  there are secrets spoken that
only family members should know.
There was a child born there that
compared to the others, wasn’t the same.
Records hidden in the safe might reveal
that he was born under a different name.
For some people there might be a bad case
of guilt and a sprinkle of shame;
but it is never told who is really to blame.
The smiles are shared during the season,
and hiding the truth is a fun game as
parties are given and presents exchanged.
So have a merry Christmas, the inside of card
says, and a have a happy new year.
Sing praises of auld lang syne, and have
another one of the imported beers.

red-kettle.jpg   The Season of Giving

Thanksgiving is over, and the work routine has begun.  However the time to give and remember what we have been given has not ended.  The Christmas season is upon us, and giving and charity is the writing theme for December at The World of Words by Elias Tobias.
Christmas is a time when people expect gifts, but they may be reluctant to give themselves. By now, many Christmas trees have been set up, and homes decorated for the holidays.  The empty spaces beneath the trees can be filled by the spirit of giving and charity.
News accounts have reported that in general, donations to charity have decreased due to harder economic times and family concerns are more important. It is also the same sources who are reporting that worthy opportunities are experienced growth in donations to a variety of causes, depending on who is promoting certain charities.
The best way to help out is to find local opportunities through the workplace, church or social organizations.  Food and toy drives are going around this time of year.  Blood drives are also scheduled at various places. My apartment complex management is offering opportunities for all three types of drives.

The Salvation Army
Nationally, one organization in the spotlight is the Salvation Army. The volunteers at the stores are familiar, as customers leave the supermarket.  After an hour or so shopping for the best deals, and rushing to get to the car in the cold to a warm home, it‘s hard to dig for change or a few bucks leftover from a spent $20 bill. That is my situation, since most purchases are done by a plastic debit card.  However, there is one great way to contribute in the comfort of a warm house or business with your own plastic card.
The Salvation Army has a way that people, who have many people on their e-mail lists, can contribute. The Salvation Army Red Kettles have been an American tradition since 1891, and now this campaign allows you to host your own Online Red Kettle. By helping the Salvation Army fill the Red Kettles, you can become a vital part of the Christmas efforts to help those in need this Christmas season.
It is not that hard to get started.  By using their tools, you can build a personal Online Red Kettle page, upload an address book, and send email invitations and download widgets that encourage family, friends and colleagues to make online donations to help you meet your goal
The organization does not charge a registration fee to participate in The Salvation Army’s Online campaign. The system automatically generates an e-gift acknowledgment and sends it via email to the address provided when the online gift is made. This receipt is generated in a PDF format that can be printed for the donor’s tax purposes.
There are three kinds of online sites.

Individual Kettle – Host your own personal Online Red Kettle, then invite others via email and various fundraising tools to fill your kettle with online donations. A running count of kettle donations appears on the host’s Individual Kettle Page.
Team Kettle – Host a fundraising team made up of several individual Online Red Kettles. All kettle donations appearing under each member’s individual kettle are pooled together and automatically reflected on the Team Kettle Page. Donations may be made to the Team Kettle or to any of the Individual Kettle members that make up the team.
Company Kettle – Host a fundraising team made up of several team kettles in a co-branded environment with The Salvation Army. A link to your online Company Kettle Page is automatically emailed to you when you register, which you can place on your internet/intranet site or email to your employees, vendors, customers, etc. The amount of money collected in your Company Kettle and in each Team Kettle will be reflected in real time on the Company Kettle Page. The only option an employee, vendor or customer has from a Company Kettle Page is to make an online donation into one of the Company Team Kettles.
Here is where to go to get more information or to begin your own Salvation Army web site: http://secure.salvationarmyusa.org/site/Donation  or click on the red bucket at the start of this article.
There are other worthy causes that will take donations directly through the Internet, many like the Red Cross, that deal with health-related charities, and certainly religious charities will accept donations.  It really does not matter to whom you give, but the more that is given, the more will be returned to those that give, perhaps in greater measure than the original donation.

The Only Gift

During Christmas, and even all year long,
Love is the only gift one can return
And still get it back again and again.
It’s not like a sweater that’s not the right size,
Or a tie that is designed to be a surprise.
You can but it online or on sale at a store,
And some times real love can be hard to find.

During Christmas, and even all year long,
Love is the only gift one can return
And still get it back again and again.
Love is a gift that always keeps on giving,
And it helps people feel they are alive.
Without those to continue giving
It would be hard for many to survive.

During Christmas, and even all year long,
Love is the only gift one can return
And still get it back again and again.
The reason for the season is Jesus,
Who eventually paid the ultimate price,
And he has showed us the way
How forgiveness leads to the Light.

During Christmas, and even all year long,
Love is the only gift one can return
And still get it back again and again.

Change theme for November

Just as the trees change their colors, November is a time for change.  Elections determine new leaders for our country.  The harvests of crops signal the end of one season, and the start of another.  The theme from last month was chaos and confusion.  This condition lasts until, in the natural scheme of life, there is some new order, bringing change. Some call it evolution. Poems published on the World of Word by Elias Tobias will reflect this theme of change.

First National Red Dot Day is November 7, 2008

If there is a justifiable cause or reason to celebrate, there is a national month, day, or week dedicated to that particular cause or celebration.  Through time and acts of Congress, some events have become traditions that are uniquely American. I would like to add another day to celebrate to the calendar.  Nov. 7 should be National Red Dot Day, and this year it lands on a Friday. Click here for a poster to get the movement started. E-mail this letter and the poster to your friends.  Let the world know America is proud of its red dots.

How to have a free poetry blog in three easy steps or claiming your homestead on the wild frontier of the Internet

For serious writers, there comes a time when various types of contests, open poetry nights,  and sharing works to friends and family are just aren’t enough.cowboyportraitbw.jpg
Publishing a book with a traditional concept, even with publishing-on-demand companies on the Internet, still takes some sort of cash investment.  Self-publishing is how many great writers received their start, and it remains an option, if money is available.  Like the open ranges of the Old West, the Internet offers alternatives to getting published without great costs for writers.
One option is to start a free poetry blog, and it can be done in three basic steps.  First, decide what kind of blog will be created. Then get a free quality host that offers an independent e-mail option, and then third, maintain and promote the web site through personal and online network techniques. Read entire article by clicking here or on the old cowboy photo.

Now

Wherever you are now, is where you’re at,
and that’s a fact.
No matter what you’ve done, you can’t go back,
so don’t look back.
You can look around the corner, to see the future,
But tomorrow’s an accessory.
What is important is what is happening now,
and yesterday’s a memory.

Chaos and Confusion this month’s theme

The news today shows a world of chaos and confusion. A war in the middle east and hotel  bombings share the headlines with the drastic swings of the stock market related to home mortgages and investment banks.   Local and state governments are asked to share the relief of financial institutions and victims of hurricanes at the same time.  Gas prices are high, and so is unemployment.   I know what it is like since I’m looking for a full-time regular job myself.  Keeping a family together is hard with the challenges of raising children and increasing food prices.

What can a poet do about this? Not save the world, but maybe a piece of it.  He or she can look around and see what good can be accomplished with the power of words.  Expressions of what needs to be changed have been the source for poets throughout the centuries.  That is the writer’s challenge.

Spanish poems appearing on World of Words

A new book or category, Words of Inspiration or “Palabras de Inspiración,” has been created on the World of Word by Elias Tobias poetry web blog and one poem by Elias Tobias will be featured each week on the site.

“After living on the border of Texas for 16 years, I know that a world of Hispanic culture includes creative writing, and that in my mind, means poetry,” Tobias said. “”Hispanics have a very colorful and imaginative literature tradition.”

The poems for the new book were previously published in the Spanish-language newspaper section of The Brownsville Herald in Brownsville, Texas.  Each poem on the poetry weblog will be linked to its English cousin, for those who want to switch back and forth.

Armed with 30 or so poems by Elias Tobias already translated, the shift to help meet poetic needs the Hispanics world wide will be accomplished with the new book or category, “Palabras de Inspiración,” on the World of Word by Elias Tobias poetry weblog.

Much of the credit of the new book goes to Santos Garcia, the news editor of the Spanish publication of the Brownsville Herald, who initially translated and published the poems. Sandra Toledo, a Spanish instructor has been preparing the Spanish-language pages for publication in the poetry blog.
