Our Love Shared, Not Owned

A poem from Karen Ladonnavich, the LSC’s newest member and also the organization’s first woman member.

Our Love Shared, Not Owned

I can be your woman, you
could be my man, and
we both could be lovers,
but I could not own your love,
nor could you own mine.
The only owner of our
moments could be time,
who steals them for his
own personal scrapbook.
We share our loves,
like the millions of fish
who live and die in the sea;
like the workers of the land,
whose crops feed them when
they don’t own the deed;
like the varieties of trees that
are homes to insects and animals
and plants who help us breathe.
If you owned my love, and
I owned yours, we would
possess each other’s soul.
We would fight for control.
This is a conflict only God
and the Devil need to know.
I can be your woman, you
could be my man, and
we both could be lovers,
but I could not own your love,
nor could you own mine.
